Size groups and life stages

Size goes by the adult male's maximum weight — the same one our breed pages use, and what shops mean by "small breed" or "large breed" food.

Food by life stage

Puppy food is made for a growing dog, so the switch comes when the dog stops growing: small dogs sooner, giants only at about two years. Food for older dogs is usually labelled "senior".

Frequently asked questions

Is one dog year really seven human years?

Not quite. "One dog year equals seven human years" is only an average. A dog matures very fast in its first year: a one-year-old dog matches a teenager of about 15, a two-year-old a person of about 24. After that the years run slower, 4 to 7 human years each, depending on size.

Why do big dogs age faster than small ones?

Big dogs grow for longer and live shorter lives. So from about six years old a big dog's years count faster: a 10-year-old small dog matches a person of about 56, a giant-breed dog of the same age a person of about 79.

When is a dog considered old?

The senior stage is the last quarter of the expected life span. Small dogs reach it at about 10 years, medium dogs at 9, large dogs at 8 and giant dogs at about 6.

Is the calculator accurate for my dog?

It is an approximate guide. The chart groups dogs by size, while each dog's ageing also depends on breed, health and lifestyle. A vet is the best judge of how your dog is ageing.

This is a general guide, not a veterinary assessment: a vet is the best judge of how your pet is ageing.
