Why do degus chew up plastic running wheels?
A degu’s teeth grow throughout life and they chew instinctively, so plastic becomes something to gnaw. Swallowed plastic can cause digestive problems, so a metal wheel and plenty of wood to gnaw are better for degus.
Do gerbils need a running wheel if they dig a lot?
Yes, although digging is very important to gerbils, most of them also happily run in a wheel. A solid wheel placed on a platform above deep bedding works best, so it is not buried by digging.
Do mice need a running wheel?
Yes, mice are very active and usually use a wheel a lot, especially at night. A group of mice benefits from several wheels, or at least one wider one, so several animals can run without getting in each other’s way.
Can a rat run in a hamster wheel?
No, a hamster wheel is too small for a rat: it would run with a strongly arched back and its tail could be injured. If a rat is interested in a wheel, it needs a large solid one at least 30 cm in diameter.
How much exercise do guinea pigs need each day?
Guinea pigs need daily freedom to move in a space where they can run, hop and forage, so a small cage alone is not enough. Many specialists recommend a roomy pen or several hours of supervised running every day.
How can I encourage a guinea pig to move more?
Scatter hay and vegetables in different parts of the pen and set up several tunnels and hideouts so the animal travels between them. Guinea pigs move more confidently in pairs or groups, so they should not be kept alone.
Why do guinea pigs jump around in their pen?
Sudden leaps into the air, known as popcorning, usually show good spirits and playfulness, especially in young animals. A spacious pen with non-slip flooring lets guinea pigs do this safely.
How much space does a rabbit need to run around?
A rabbit needs space where it can make several hops in a row, stand up on its hind legs and stretch out. Animal welfare organisations often recommend a large pen or a safe room with the chance to move for several hours every day.
Are tunnels and obstacle courses suitable for rabbits?
Yes, rabbits enjoy going through tunnels and hopping over low obstacles, and some are even trained on agility courses. Obstacles must be low and stable and the flooring non-slip, so the rabbit does not get hurt on landing.
Can a rabbit be walked on a harness?
Some rabbits get used to a harness, but many find it stressful, and a frightened rabbit can hurt itself while thrashing. An outdoor pen in the shade is a safer way to exercise, and a harness, if used, must fit the rabbit’s size and be introduced gradually.
Why is exercise important for small pets?
Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, strong muscles and joints, improves digestion and reduces boredom and stress. Inactive small pets are more likely to become overweight and may start behaving unusually, such as chewing the cage bars.
Does a running wheel help an overweight hamster lose weight?
A wheel of the right size helps keep it active, but diet matters most for weight. If the hamster is clearly overweight, it is worth talking to a vet about diet and a health check.
Why does my hamster chew the cage bars even though it has a wheel?
Bar chewing often shows that the cage is too small or lacks enrichment, bedding for digging or hiding places, even when there is a wheel. More space, deep bedding, tunnels and chew items usually reduce this behaviour.
Does a hamster use its wheel less in winter?
In a cool room hamsters may become sluggish, and temperatures that are too low can trigger a torpor-like state. Keep the cage at a steady room temperature without draughts, and if the hamster becomes unusually cold and inactive, contact a vet.
Can a small pet use its wheel as usual in hot summer weather?
In the heat small pets usually reduce their activity themselves, but the cage must be kept out of the sun and fresh water provided. If the animal breathes heavily, lies stretched out or is lethargic, it needs cooling and a vet.
Does a small pet need a wheel in its carrier when travelling?
No, a wheel is unnecessary in a carrier for a short trip and can be dangerous, as it may sway or knock the animal while moving. For a longer stay elsewhere, the animal needs its usual cage with a wheel.
How do I set up a running wheel in a glass hamster tank?
Tanks usually use free-standing wheels or wheels with a stand placed on a plate or directly on the floor. Make sure the wheel does not touch the glass, as it can rattle and knock against it while the animal runs.
Can spare parts be bought for a small pet’s running wheel?
For some wheels you can buy separate stands, mounting parts or bearings, so a broken part does not mean replacing the whole wheel. Before buying, check which model the parts are made for and whether their size fits.
What should I do if a small pet’s leg gets stuck in the running wheel?
Calmly stop the wheel and carefully free the leg without pulling it by force, taking the wheel apart if needed. Even if the leg looks fine, keep watching the animal, and see a vet for limping, swelling or bleeding.
Can running in a wheel damage a small pet’s feet?
Long runs on a barred, very rough or dirty surface can irritate the feet and cause inflammation. A solid, clean and dry wheel surface lowers this risk, and red or swollen feet should be checked by a vet.
