Why is it worth rearranging a small pet’s tunnels and activities?

Occasionally rearranging tunnels, hideouts and toys makes the surroundings new for the animal and encourages exploring. It is important not to change everything at once, and to leave key spots such as the hideout and wheel in place.

What should I look for when buying a running wheel for a small pet?

Check that the wheel’s diameter suits the species, the running surface is solid, the wheel is attached on one side and has no gaps near the axle. It also matters that it turns easily and quietly, stands steadily and is made of a chew-resistant material.

What is a running saucer for mice and is it suitable?

Mice often happily run on tilted running saucers, because they are light and spin quickly. A saucer can be an extra activity, but mice should still have a regular solid running wheel as well.

Do spiny mice need a running wheel?

Yes, spiny mice are very active and run a lot, so a solid wheel at least 20 cm in diameter suits them. Their tail skin is very fragile, so the wheel must have no gaps or cross supports at all.

Do young rats like a running wheel more than adult rats?

Young rats are more likely to try out a wheel out of curiosity, and some keep using it as adults. If you add a wheel, it should suit an adult rat, because youngsters grow quickly.

Why does a small pet’s running wheel start squeaking after washing?

Water can get into the bearing or axle and cause friction or rust if the wheel is not dried. After washing, dry the wheel well and let it dry out completely, and if the squeak persists, replace the bearing or the wheel.

Can a running wheel be taken apart for cleaning?

Many wheels can be removed from the stand or axle, which makes it easier to clean every corner. Choose a wheel that is easy to take apart and reassemble, as this means less build-up of dirt and odours.

Does a metal running wheel get hot in summer?

A metal wheel standing in the sun or near a heater can heat up and become uncomfortable or even dangerous. Keep the cage away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and the metal stays at room temperature.

Why does my hamster only run at night?

Hamsters are crepuscular and nocturnal, so they usually sleep during the day and become active after dark. They should not be woken up and made to exercise during the day, as this stresses them.

How can I help an old guinea pig keep moving?

An older guinea pig needs non-slip flooring, low hideout entrances and ramps without steep slopes. Spread food and hay in several places so it keeps moving, and show any stiff gait or reluctance to move to a vet.

Why are slippery floors bad for small pets in a play pen?

On a slippery surface small pets and rabbits slide, can strain muscles or dislocate joints, and often avoid moving at all. Non-slip mats or fabric give them grip and the confidence to run.

What size play pen does a hamster need for time outside the cage?

A modest but safe pen with smooth walls, a few hideouts and tunnels is enough for a hamster. What matters more than size is that the hamster cannot escape and is supervised the whole time.

Does a free-roaming house rabbit need a pen?

A free-roaming rabbit still benefits from its own safe base with a hideout, litter tray, hay and water to retreat to. A pen also comes in handy when you cannot supervise it at home.

Does a running wheel work in a cage made from a large plastic storage box?

Yes, large plastic boxes usually use a free-standing wheel on a platform or on the floor. The box must be tall enough, and the wheel must not touch the walls or lid.

Why does my hamster run in its wheel with full cheek pouches?

Hamsters sometimes carry food in their cheeks while running, and this is normal. However, if the cheeks look constantly swollen or uneven, check whether the pouches are blocked and see a vet.

How can I tell that a small pet is not getting enough exercise?

Weight gain, constant bar chewing, pacing in circles or repeatedly jumping at the walls, and apathy can all point to a lack of exercise and stimulation. In that case, add more space and activities, and discuss sudden behaviour changes with a vet.

How long does it take a small pet to get used to a new wheel?

Many animals start using a new wheel within a few days, but some need a week or more. If the wheel is the right size, turns easily and stands steadily, patience is usually all it takes.

Can a small pet run around in the bathtub instead of a play pen?

A dry, clean bathtub lined with fabric is sometimes used as a temporary safe space for small rodents, because it is hard to climb out of. Block the drain, add hiding places and do not leave the animal alone.

Is a running wheel alone enough exercise for a small pet?

Not always. A wheel matters, but small pets also need to dig, climb, forage and explore, so it is best to combine the wheel with tunnels, hideouts and safe time outside the cage.

Is a children’s play pen suitable for small pets?

A play pen made for children can work for guinea pigs or rabbits if the gaps between the bars are narrow enough and it is stable. It is usually unsuitable for small rodents, which slip through the gaps.
