Can I buy small-pet products directly on zoogidas.lt?

No. zoogidas.lt only compares prices. The shop link takes you to the shop's own website, where you place and pay for the order.

Why is small-pet bedding compared by price per litre?

Bedding is often sold by volume and packs vary a lot. The price per litre shows which one is really the cheapest.

Which small pet should I choose if it is my first pet?

Guinea pigs or rats are often suggested for beginners: they are active during the day, friendly and rarely bite. Hamsters are active at night, while rabbits and chinchillas need more space and know-how.

Is a small pet suitable for a young child?

Small pets are fragile, often dislike being carried and are easily injured if dropped, so a young child can only look after one with an adult's help. Responsibility for the animal's care always stays with the parents.

How does caring for a rabbit differ from caring for a guinea pig?

Both need plenty of hay and space, but a rabbit needs more room to run and hop, and it can be litter trained. A guinea pig cannot make its own vitamin C, so it must get it from food every day.

How long do rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets live?

Hamsters, rats and mice usually live about 2–3 years, guinea pigs 5–8, degus 6–8, rabbits 8–12, and chinchillas often more than 15 years. It is worth considering before getting an animal.

Is a hamster suitable for people who work during the day?

Yes, a hamster sleeps during the day and is active in the evening and at night, so it suits people who work. Just don't put its cage in the bedroom, as the wheel and chewing at night can disturb your sleep.

Which small pets need to live in pairs or groups?

Guinea pigs, rats, degus, chinchillas, female mice and rabbits are social animals and need a companion of their own species. The Syrian hamster, by contrast, must live alone.

Can a rabbit and a guinea pig be kept in the same cage?

It is not advised: a rabbit is stronger and can injure a guinea pig, their dietary needs differ, and rabbits can carry bacteria that are dangerous to guinea pigs. It is better to give each one a companion of its own species.

Is a chinchilla suitable for a flat?

Yes, if you have room for a tall cage and a cool room, because chinchillas tolerate heat poorly. They are active in the evening, need a dust bath and live a long time, so they are a long-term commitment.

How are degus different from other rodents?

Degus are active during the day, very social and should live at least in pairs. They are prone to diabetes, so their food must contain no sugar, and they need plenty of chewing and sand bathing.

Do rats make good pets?

Yes, rats are clever, social, bond quickly with people and learn simple commands. They need at least one companion of the same sex, a tall cage and time outside the cage every day.

Can rabbits and rodents cause allergies?

Yes, allergies can be caused not only by the animal itself but also by hay or bedding dust. Spend time with that species before getting one, choose low-dust bedding, and ask a doctor if in doubt.

Does a small pet's cage always smell bad?

No, the smell usually comes from wet bedding in the toilet corner. If you remove wet spots daily and use absorbent bedding there is hardly any smell; only male mice and rats smell noticeably stronger.

What should I buy before bringing a small pet home?

Get a cage or pen, a house to hide in, bedding, a water bottle or bowl, a food bowl, food suited to the species, hay (for herbivores), chew items and a carrier. It is best to set everything up in advance.

What does a rabbit need on its first day in a new home?

A spacious pen, a litter box with hay, a hay rack, a heavy water bowl or bottle, a hide and the same food it ate before. In the first days, what a rabbit needs most is peace and quiet.

What do guinea pigs need to start with?

A cage with a large floor area, one house per guinea pig, a hay rack, a water bottle, a heavy ceramic bowl, pellets with vitamin C and absorbent bedding. Remember they should be kept in at least pairs.

What does a hamster need to start with?

A spacious cage or tank with a deep layer of bedding to dig in, a wheel of the right size with a solid running surface, a house, a sand bath, a water bottle, hamster food and chew items.

What does a chinchilla need to start with?

A tall multi-level cage with wooden shelves, a wooden house, special bathing dust and a bath, hay, chinchilla pellets and chew sticks. A chinchilla should not be able to reach any plastic parts.

What do rats need to start with?

A tall multi-level cage with narrow bar spacing, hammocks, a house, bedding, rat food, a water bottle and toys. Rats should be kept in at least pairs.
