Where in the cage is the best place for a running wheel?

Put the wheel on a level, firm base, away from the water bottle, bowls and the hideout entrance. To stop it swaying, it can stand on a platform or directly on the cage floor rather than on deep loose bedding.

How do I secure a free-standing wheel so it does not tip over?

Stand it on a level base and, if needed, pile bedding over its foot or rest it against a stable part of the cage. The wheel must not sway or touch the bars when the animal runs fast in it.

Why does the running wheel keep getting clogged with bedding?

Digging small pets, especially gerbils and hamsters, kick bedding into the wheel or around the axle. Raise the wheel on a platform or plate so it sits above the bedding level, and clean the axle regularly.

Should the wheel stand on a platform above the bedding?

It is often practical: on a firm platform the wheel sways less, less bedding gets into it and the animal can climb in easily. The platform must be stable and not too high, so the animal does not fall off it.

Can a running wheel be mounted high up in the cage?

It can, but only if the animal can climb in and out easily and safely. A hamster that jumps or falls out of a wheel mounted high up can get hurt, because hamsters judge heights poorly.

Why won’t my hamster use its new running wheel?

Sometimes the animal needs a few days to get used to it, especially if the wheel smells new or stands in an unusual place. Check that the wheel turns easily, does not wobble and is not too small, and put a little old bedding with a familiar smell in it.

Is it normal for a small pet not to use the wheel at all?

Yes, some animals, especially older ones, rats or calmer individuals, show little interest in a wheel. What matters is that they move in other ways: climbing, digging, exploring a pen or running under supervision outside the cage.

Is it normal for a hamster to run in its wheel all night?

Yes, in the wild hamsters cover long distances at night looking for food, so long runs in the wheel are natural. If the animal runs almost non-stop, it is worth thinking about a bigger cage and more enrichment.

Can too much running in a wheel harm a small pet?

For a healthy animal running in a wheel of the right size, running in itself is not harmful. What should raise concern is compulsive, almost non-stop running together with other signs of stress, as this can indicate boredom or a cage that is too small.

How many kilometres does a hamster run in its wheel in a night?

Studies and owners’ measurements show that an active hamster can run several kilometres in a night. The distance varies greatly between individuals and depends on age, species, wheel size and how much other enrichment the cage has.

Is it worth buying a running wheel with a counter?

Wheels or add-ons with a counter show how far the animal runs and help you notice if activity suddenly drops. This is useful for monitoring, but wheel size, safety and quietness remain the most important factors.

What does it mean if a small pet suddenly stops running in its wheel?

It may be due to a broken or clogged wheel, heat or ageing, but also pain or illness. Check the wheel, and if the animal is otherwise less active, eating poorly or limping, see a vet.

Does an old hamster still need a running wheel?

Yes, a wheel helps an ageing animal stay mobile, but it should turn easily and sit low so it is easy to climb into. If the animal moves with difficulty or seems to be in pain, talk to a vet.

Should a pregnant or newly delivered female small pet keep her running wheel?

Most females regulate their own activity, so the wheel can usually stay. Once the young are born, make sure they cannot get into the spinning wheel, and ask a vet if in doubt.

Is a running wheel safe for baby small pets?

Very young babies can tumble into a spinning wheel or get trapped, so until they are older it is worth keeping an eye on the wheel or temporarily raising it so they cannot reach it. Older youngsters use a wheel safely.

Why does my hamster pee in its running wheel?

Some hamsters choose the wheel as a toilet spot, especially if it stands in a corner or the cage is short of space. Put a sand toilet in another corner and clean the wheel regularly so no smell stays in it.

How often should a small pet’s running wheel be cleaned?

Visible droppings and urine should be removed every few days, and the whole wheel washed during the general cage clean. If the animal uses the wheel as a toilet, it needs cleaning more often.

What should I clean a plastic small-pet running wheel with?

Warm water and a mild unscented washing-up liquid work well, and diluted vinegar for urine deposits. Rinse and dry the wheel thoroughly so no detergent smell or residue is left.

How do I clean a wooden running wheel?

Clean a wooden wheel dry with a brush and wipe off dirt with a damp cloth, without soaking it. Let it dry completely afterwards, because damp wood can go mouldy and start to smell.

How can I remove urine scale from a running wheel?

Urine scale dissolves well in diluted vinegar or a citric acid solution. Leave the solution on for a few minutes, scrub with a brush and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
