Can a treat ball replace a dog’s bowl?

A treat ball that releases dry food as it rolls can replace the bowl for some meals and keep the dog busy. It works with dry food, while wet food still needs a regular or slow-feeder bowl.

How does an automatic dog feeder work?

An automatic feeder dispenses a set portion of dry food at a time set by a timer or an app. It helps when the owner gets home late or the dog needs several small meals a day.

Does an automatic feeder work with wet dog food?

Most automatic feeders are designed for dry food only. For wet food there are feeders with sealed compartments and cooling packs, but it should not sit at room temperature longer than the manufacturer recommends.

What kibble size does an automatic dog feeder work with?

Manufacturers state what kibble size a feeder can dispense, because pieces that are too big or oddly shaped can jam it. For large dogs on large kibble, choose a model designed for it.

Can I leave my dog for a few days with just an automatic feeder?

It is not recommended. The feeder can break, jam or run out of power, and the dog also needs water, walks and care. If you go away, arrange for someone to visit the dog at least once or twice a day.

Why does an automatic dog feeder have a backup power supply?

Backup batteries let the feeder keep dispensing food during a power cut. Check whether your model supports this and replace the batteries regularly.

Can a dog break into an automatic feeder?

A strong, determined dog can knock over a light feeder or prise off the lid. For large dogs, choose a stable model with a locking lid and place it where the dog cannot push it around.

How do I clean an automatic dog feeder?

The hopper and bowl need regular washing and thorough drying, because food dust and fat build up inside. Do not submerge the electronic parts, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Does an automatic feeder help control a dog’s weight?

Yes, it dispenses an exact amount at a set time, which makes overfeeding less likely. Still, set the portion according to the dog’s weight and the food packaging guidance, and count treats in the daily allowance.

How is a smart dog feeder different from a simple timer feeder?

A smart feeder can be controlled from a phone, shows when food was dispensed, and some have a camera or voice call. A simple timer feeder works without the internet and is usually easier to set up.

Is a gravity feeder suitable for a dog?

A gravity feeder keeps refilling the bowl with food as it empties, so it only suits dogs that regulate their own eating. For most dogs it encourages overeating, so portion-dispensing feeders are more often chosen.

Does a dog need a water fountain?

A fountain is not essential, but flowing, filtered water encourages some dogs to drink more. It helps with dogs that drink little or in homes where the dog is left alone for long periods.

What capacity water fountain does a dog need?

A fountain of a couple of litres is often enough for small dogs, while large dogs or several dogs need a bigger one. Choose one that holds enough water for a whole day, even in hot weather.

How often should a dog water fountain filter be changed?

The manufacturer states how often to change the filter, usually every few weeks. With several dogs, hard water or a dog that sheds a lot, the filter may need changing more often.

How do I clean a dog water fountain?

Take the fountain apart, wash the reservoir, pump and tubes in warm soapy water and rinse well. Many manufacturers recommend doing this every week or two, and topping up or changing the water daily.

Why is my dog’s water fountain noisy?

Noise is usually caused by a low water level, a clogged pump or hair and deposits inside it. Top up the water and clean the pump, and if the noise remains, the pump may need replacing.

Do dogs drink more from a fountain than from a bowl?

Some dogs drink more willingly from running water, others notice no difference. If your dog avoids the fountain, leave an ordinary water bowl next to it so it always has something to drink from.

How do I get my dog used to drinking from a water fountain?

Put the fountain where the usual bowl stood, and at first you can use it switched off as a plain bowl. Once the dog is used to it, turn the flow on, and keep the old bowl nearby until you are sure the dog drinks from the fountain.

What material should I choose for a dog water fountain?

Plastic fountains are lighter and often hold more, while stainless steel and ceramic ones are easier to clean and hold fewer smells. A big dog can knock over a light fountain, so a heavier or more stable model suits it better.

Is a dog water fountain electrically safe?

Most fountains use a low-voltage pump and adapter, but the cable needs protecting from chewing. Hide it behind furniture or in a cable guard, especially if you have a puppy.
