How do I get rid of dog smell in the house?

Wash the bed and throws regularly, vacuum with a pet-hair attachment and air the rooms. If the dog itself smells strongly, it can be a sign of skin, ear or dental problems, so ask a vet.

How can I remove dog hair from furniture and clothes more easily?

Rubber gloves, lint rollers and vacuums with pet-hair attachments help. Less hair ends up around the house if you brush the dog regularly, especially when it is shedding.

What kind of dog poop bags should I choose?

Choose bags that are thick enough and leak-proof and that fit a dispenser clipped to the leash. Biodegradable bags are kinder to the environment, but keep them dry, as they can soften over time.

Do I have to pick up my dog's poop in Lithuania?

Yes, most municipalities' rules require dog owners to pick up after their pet in public places. So always take bags with you when you go for a walk.

How do I clean my dog's paws after a walk?

Keep a towel or absorbent mat and a bowl of warm water, or a special paw-washing cup, by the door. After the walk, check between the pads for stones, thorns or burrs.

How do I protect the sofa and car seats from dog hair and dirt?

Washable, waterproof throws for the sofa and seat covers for the car are the easiest option. They come off quickly for washing, and the upholstery stays clean.

How often does a dog need a bath?

Most dogs are bathed only when they get dirty or start to smell, usually every few weeks or months. Bathing too often can dry out the skin; between baths, brushing and cleaning the paws is enough.

What grooming supplies does every dog need?

The basic kit: a brush or comb suited to the coat, nail clippers, a gentle dog shampoo, an ear cleaner and a toothbrush with dog toothpaste. Buy anything else according to your breed's needs.

How often should I trim my dog's nails?

Usually every 3–6 weeks, depending on how much the nails wear down on walks. If you hear the nails clicking on the floor, it is time to trim; if you don't feel confident, a groomer or vet can do it.

How do I look after my dog's teeth at home?

Brushing regularly with a dog toothbrush and toothpaste, ideally daily, works best. Dental treats and chews can help but don't replace brushing; strong bad breath or red gums are a sign to see the vet.

Do a dog's ears need cleaning?

Healthy ears rarely need cleaning; checking them regularly is enough. Dogs with floppy ears or that swim often may need an ear cleaner; if the ears are red, smell bad or the dog scratches them, see a vet.

Can I groom or clip my dog at home?

Many owners do basic tidying themselves, trimming the fur on the paws and around the eyes with pet clippers or round-tipped scissors. Complex cuts and hand-stripping are better left to a groomer.

What products help a dog when it is left home alone?

Puzzles, treat-filled toys and long-lasting chews help keep the dog busy and calm. If it howls, destroys things or soils the house when alone, it may be separation anxiety, so ask a vet or a behaviour specialist.

Is an automatic feeder worth buying for a dog?

An automatic feeder helps if the dog must be fed at set times while you are out, or if portions need strict control. It works with dry food but doesn't replace human care when you are away for longer.

Does a dog need a water fountain?

A fountain isn't necessary, but some dogs prefer to drink running water and the filter keeps it clean for longer. An ordinary bowl works just as well if you change the water at least once a day.

How much water does a dog need a day?

Fresh water should always be available. A dog usually drinks about 50–60 ml per kilogram of body weight a day, more in hot weather or on dry food; a sudden increase in thirst is a reason to see a vet.

How long can a dog be left alone at home?

An adult dog can usually be alone for a few hours, but not all day without a break, and puppies and old dogs need to go out more often. If you work long hours, arrange for someone to walk the dog in the middle of the day.

Which houseplants are dangerous for dogs?

Plants that can be poisonous to dogs include dieffenbachia, aloe vera, oleander, azalea and sago palm. If your dog tends to chew plants, keep them out of reach and check that a new plant is safe before buying it.

Which human foods are dangerous for dogs?

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, the sweetener xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones are dangerous for dogs. If your dog has eaten any of these, call a vet straight away.

What should I do if my dog swallowed a piece of a toy or another object?

Call a vet straight away and don't make the dog vomit without their instructions. It is especially serious if the dog is vomiting, won't eat, has a painful belly or can't pass stools.
