How is tofu litter different from bentonite litter?

Tofu litter is much lighter, less dusty and can often be flushed in small amounts, while bentonite is heavier but forms very firm clumps. Tofu granules are larger, and some cats need time to get used to them.

Does plant-based cat litter attract pests?

Plant-based litter is made from food by-products, so if stored badly it can attract insects or rodents. Keep it in a sealed pack or box in a dry place.

Can a cat's litter box sit on a carpet?

It can, but scattered litter and drops of urine soak into the carpet, so it is better to put a washable mat or plastic tray under the box. A soft carpet next to the box encourages some cats to urinate on it.

What is litter box furniture?

It is a cabinet or bench with an opening that houses the litter box inside, so it is hidden in the interior. It is important that there is enough room inside, good ventilation and that the box is easy to pull out for cleaning.

Can a cat's litter box be kept in a cupboard or under the stairs?

Yes, if the cat can always get in freely and the space is roomy and ventilated. Odour builds up in an enclosed space, so a box kept there needs especially regular cleaning.

Why should a cat's litter box be placed so the cat can see its surroundings?

A cat feels vulnerable while toileting, so it likes a spot from which it can see an approaching person or animal and get away. Especially in multi-cat homes, the box should not be in a dead end.

Why won't a cat use a new litter box?

A new box smells different and may have a different shape or a lid, so a cat sometimes avoids it. Keep the old box next to it for a while, add a little old litter to the new one and let the cat get used to it at its own pace.

How long does a cat need to get used to a new box or litter?

Most cats adapt within a few days to a week, especially if the change is made gradually. If the cat still avoids the box after a few weeks, go back to the previous option or try another.

How do I keep a cat litter scoop hygienic?

Keep the scoop in a separate holder or tray next to the box, not on the floor. Wash it regularly with hot water and detergent, especially when you wash the whole box.

Does a cat litter box need protection against urine splashes?

If a cat urinates standing up or right at the edge, urine can end up on the wall or floor. A high-sided box, a covered box or an easy-wipe panel fixed behind the box helps.

Can a cat litter mat be washed in the washing machine?

Some fabric mats can go in the washing machine if the label says so, while rubber or plastic ones usually just need rinsing in the shower. Shake out the litter thoroughly before washing so it does not clog the machine.

Why do a cat's faeces smell especially bad?

The smell of faeces depends on the food, its protein and digestibility, so it can change after a food switch. A very strong smell along with soft stools or diarrhoea can point to a digestive problem, so it is worth asking a vet.

How many times a day does a cat usually use the litter box?

Most adult cats urinate a few times a day and defecate about once a day, though this depends on the cat and its food. What matters most is noticing sudden changes and talking to a vet if they occur.

At what age do kittens start using a litter box?

Kittens usually start using the box at around three to four weeks of age, learning from their mother. At that stage they need a small, low-sided box with soft, dust-free litter.

Where should a litter box go for a cat with newborn kittens?

Place the mother's box near the nest so she can quickly return to the kittens, but not right next to it. When the kittens start walking, add another low box nearby for them.

Why does a kitten play or roll in the litter box?

For kittens litter is an interesting texture, so they dig and play in it. It usually passes with age, and so the kitten does not eat litter, choose plant-based or paper litter at first and offer more toys.

Can litter injure a cat's paws?

Sharper crystals or hard pellets can be unpleasant for sensitive paws, especially after surgery or with small wounds. If the cat limps, licks its paws or is reluctant to step into the box, check the paws and talk to a vet.

Can a cat be allergic to litter?

In some cats dust, fragrances or certain materials can cause sneezing, watery eyes or skin irritation. Try an unscented, low-dust litter from another material, and if the symptoms do not pass, see a vet.

How do I protect a cat's litter box from the dog?

Many dogs like to raid the cat's box or even eat the faeces. A top-entry box, a box in a higher spot the cat can reach or a door barrier with an opening big enough only for the cat helps.

How do I protect a cat's litter box from small children?

To small children litter looks like a sandpit, so place the box where they cannot easily reach it or choose a covered or top-entry box. The cat's way to the box must stay clear.
