Is it worth buying second-hand products for a dog?

A used crate, playpen, carrier or ramp is worth buying if it is clean and undamaged. Beds, toys, collars and bowls used by other animals are better avoided because of hygiene and possible parasites or germs.

How do I make a dog supplies shopping list so I don't forget anything?

Split items into consumables (food, treats, poop bags, parasite prevention) and long-lasting ones (bed, leash, bowls, toys). Reorder consumables before they run out so you don't have to buy in a hurry at a higher price.

Is a subscription worth it for dog products?

Some shops offer to send the same food or supplies regularly at a small discount. It is convenient if your dog eats the same food long term, but compare prices now and then, as the same product may be cheaper elsewhere.

Why does the same dog product cost different amounts in different shops?

Shops buy stock on different terms and apply different mark-ups, promotions and delivery conditions. Prices also change often, so it is worth comparing them before every larger purchase.

Can heavy bags of dog food be delivered to a parcel locker?

Many parcel lockers accept parcels only up to a certain weight and size, so large food bags are sometimes shipped by courier only. Check the shop's delivery terms and weight-based delivery cost before ordering.

Can I collect dog products ordered online myself?

Some online shops have physical stores or pick-up points where you can collect your order without a delivery fee. This is handy if you want to look at the product or try it on your dog on the spot.

Are human products such as shampoo or toothpaste suitable for a dog?

No. Human shampoo doesn't suit the pH of a dog's skin and can dry it out, and human toothpaste may contain fluoride or xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Use only products made for dogs.

What do I need to buy before bringing a puppy home?

The essentials: puppy food (ideally the same one it ate at the breeder or shelter), two bowls, a bed or crate, a light collar or harness with a leash, a few chew toys and cleaning supplies for accidents. Other things can be bought gradually.

Does a puppy need a crate?

A crate isn't compulsory, but for many puppies it becomes a safe place to rest and helps with house training. Introduce it gradually and never use it as punishment.

What size crate should I buy for a growing puppy?

Choose a crate for the dog's expected adult size and use a divider to reduce the inside space. The puppy should be able to stand, turn around and lie down, but not have so much room that it can relieve itself in one corner.

What collar or harness should I buy for a puppy?

A light, adjustable collar or harness is right for a puppy; it will outgrow them quickly, so expensive ones aren't worth it. Two fingers should fit between the collar and the neck; check the fit every few weeks.

What toys suit a teething puppy?

Softer rubber puppy chews, toys that can be chilled and rope toys. Avoid very hard objects that can damage teeth and toys small enough for the puppy to swallow.

Should I buy absorbent training pads for a puppy?

Pads help in the first weeks, while the puppy can't hold on for long or can't go outside until its vaccinations are complete. The goal is still to teach it to go outdoors, so gradually move the pads closer to the door.

What should I use to clean up a puppy's accidents at home?

Use enzymatic cleaners, which break down the substances that cause urine odour. Ammonia-based cleaners smell similar to urine and can encourage the puppy to go in the same spot again.

When should I buy adult-dog products for my puppy?

Replace the collar, harness and bed as the puppy outgrows them, and put off big purchases until it is nearly grown: small breeds usually finish growing at 9–12 months, large ones at 12–24. Switch to adult food following the maker's and your vet's advice.

How do I puppy-proof my home before bringing a puppy home?

Put away cables, shoes, medicines, household chemicals and small items the puppy could swallow. Block stairs and risky rooms with safety gates and keep the bin closed or out of reach.

Does a puppy need a special shampoo?

Puppies are bathed rarely, only when they get dirty, and a gentle puppy shampoo is right for that. Frequent bathing can dry out the skin, so brushing and wiping with a damp cloth is usually enough.

How many toys does a puppy need?

A few toys of different types are enough: a chew, a soft toy, a ball and a puzzle. Rotate them every few days so they stay interesting for longer and you don't end up buying too many.

What should I ask the breeder or shelter about a puppy's food and care?

Ask which food the puppy eats and how often, which vaccinations and deworming have been done and whether it is microchipped. Keep to the same routine in the first days to reduce stress.

Does a dog have to be microchipped in Lithuania?

Yes, in Lithuania dogs must be microchipped and registered in the Pet Register. A vet does this; it is also worth having an ID tag with your phone number on the collar.
