Is cotton clothing suitable for dogs?

Cotton is soft and breathable, so it suits T-shirts, pyjamas or recovery suits. It is not suited to cold and wet weather, as it absorbs water and dries slowly.

Should dog clothing be breathable?

Yes, fabric that does not breathe traps moisture and heat, so during active movement the dog can overheat and the coat can get damp from inside. For active dogs choose breathable fabrics or models with ventilation.

Can a dog be allergic to clothing fabric?

Yes, some dogs react to wool, dyes or detergent residue, with redness, itching or hair loss under the garment. If you notice these signs, remove the garment, and if they do not go away, see a vet.

Are down-filled dog clothes suitable for a Lithuanian winter?

Down-filled garments are very warm and light, so they suit dry frost. However, Lithuanian winters are often damp, and wet down loses its warmth, so synthetic-filled models with a waterproof shell are more practical.

When is a sweater enough for a dog instead of a jacket?

A sweater is enough in cool but dry weather, for example in autumn or spring, and indoors in cool rooms. In rain or snow a sweater soaks through quickly, so a jacket or a raincoat over the sweater works better.

Can a knitted dog sweater snag on branches?

Yes, chunky-knit sweaters snag easily on branches, bushes or the dog's own claws, and pulled yarn can tangle. For forest walks, smooth fleece or softshell is a better choice.

What is a fleece dog top and what is it good for?

A fleece top is a light, soft and warm garment that dries quickly and is easy to wash. It suits dry cool weather, as a base layer under a raincoat or for sleeping in a cool home.

Can a dog wear several layers of clothing?

Yes, layers help adapt to the weather: for example, a thin fleece or sweater under a raincoat for cold rain. Make sure the base layer is not too thick and the outer garment does not become tight.

What is a dog vest and how does it differ from a jacket?

A vest usually covers the back and chest but has no sleeves and is lighter, so it restricts movement less. It suits cool rather than cold weather and active dogs for which a jacket would be too warm.

Is a dog sweater with sleeves comfortable?

Sleeves keep the front legs warmer and stop the garment slipping, but sleeves that are too narrow or too long rub the armpits and hinder walking. They should end above the elbow or be stretchy.

Should a dog sweater have a turtleneck?

A turtleneck warms the sensitive neck area, so it is useful for greyhounds and other long-necked dogs. For other dogs a regular neck is enough, as long as it is not tight and does not interfere with the collar.

Why did my dog's sweater shrink after washing?

Wool and some blended-yarn sweaters shrink when washed in water that is too hot, rubbed or tumble-dried. Wash according to the label, in cool water on a gentle cycle, and dry flat.

Is it okay for a dog to sleep in a sweater?

For a small or hairless dog in a cool home, a light, loose sweater or pyjamas can be comfortable for sleeping. Avoid thick or tight garments and do not leave the dog dressed if it tries to pull the garment off or seems hot.

What are dog pyjamas and what are they for?

Dog pyjamas are a light, usually cotton or jersey suit with legs. They can keep small or hairless dogs warm in cool homes and reduce hair shedding on furniture during moulting.

Does a dog need boots in winter?

Boots help if your dog walks on salted pavements, ice or sharp frozen snow, especially if its paw pads crack or it limps after walks. Many dogs that walk mainly in parks do not need boots.

How does road salt affect a dog's paws?

Road salt and other de-icers dry out and irritate the paw pads, can cause cracks and, if the dog licks its paws, can irritate the mouth or stomach. Rinse the paws in warm water and dry them after walks.

How do I measure my dog's paw for boots?

Place your dog's paw on a sheet of paper while it stands with full weight on it, mark the widest points and measure width and length, with or without claws as the manufacturer specifies. Front and back paws often differ in size.

Why does my dog walk strangely in boots?

A dog wearing boots for the first time often lifts its legs high because it cannot feel the ground as usual. This is normal and usually passes after a few short practice sessions at home with treats and praise.

How do I get my dog used to boots?

Start with one boot for a few seconds at home, give a treat and take it off. Gradually increase the time and add more boots until the dog walks calmly in all four, and only then go outside.

Why do my dog's boots fall off during walks?

Boots usually fall off if they are too big, not fastened fully or lack a secure strap above the wrist. Check the size and choose models with a taller cuff and two Velcro straps or an adjustable drawcord.
