What should I do if my cat wakes me up at night?

Play actively with the cat and feed it before bed so it is tired and full. Do not get up or feed the cat when it wakes you, as it learns that this works; an automatic feeder helps with an early-morning meal.

Why does my cat meow all the time?

Cats meow for attention, food or to go out, and some breeds such as Siamese are simply more talkative. A sudden increase in meowing, especially in an older cat, can signal a health problem.

How do I teach my cat to stay off the table?

Offer the cat an allowed high spot nearby, such as a cat tree or shelf, from which it can see what is going on. Do not leave food on the table, and lift the cat down calmly, without punishments that only cause stress.

Can a cat be trained?

Yes, cats can learn commands such as coming when called, sitting or getting into the carrier, if sessions are short and the right behaviour is rewarded with a treat. Many owners use a clicker for this.

Why is my cat marking territory indoors?

Urine marking is most typical of unneutered males, but it can also be caused by stress, new animals or cats seen through the window. Neutering and removing the source of stress often help, and marked spots should be cleaned with an enzyme cleaner.

How can I help a shy cat?

A shy cat needs hiding places, high spots and a quiet room it can retreat to. Let it approach you on its own terms, speak softly and use treats and play so it associates people with good things.

Which vaccinations does a cat need?

The core cat vaccines protect against panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus and calicivirus, and a rabies vaccine is also recommended for cats that go outdoors or travel. The vet draws up the vaccination plan based on the cat's age and lifestyle.

How often does a cat need deworming?

It depends on age and lifestyle: kittens are treated more often, and adult cats that go outdoors more often than indoor-only cats. Agree the exact schedule and product with your vet and follow the label.

Why must flea treatments for dogs never be used on cats?

Some dog treatments contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats and can cause seizures or even death. Only use products made for cats and follow the label.

How do I look after my cat's teeth?

The best prevention is regular brushing with a cat toothbrush and toothpaste, which the cat should be introduced to gradually. Dental treats and kibble can help, but only a vet can remove tartar.

What are the signs that a cat is ill?

Warning signs include changes in appetite or thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, hiding, urinating in the wrong place or difficulty urinating, changes in breathing and weight loss. Cats often hide pain, so even small changes in behaviour deserve attention.

What should go in a first-aid kit for a cat?

Useful items are sterile dressings, a wound wash made for animals, a tick remover, a thermometer, small scissors and your vet's contact details. Only give your cat medicines prescribed by a vet.

Why is it important to spay or neuter a cat?

Spaying or neutering prevents unwanted litters, reduces heat, territory marking and roaming, and lowers the risk of certain diseases. It is a routine procedure recommended by vets.

How often should a healthy cat see a vet?

A healthy adult cat is usually advised to have a check-up once a year, often together with vaccinations. Kittens in their first months and older cats need more frequent visits.

How do I prepare my cat for a vet visit?

Get the cat used to the carrier in advance by leaving it open at home with a soft blanket and treats inside. Bring the pet passport to the visit and write down any symptoms you have noticed and your questions.

How can I weigh my cat at home?

Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the cat and subtract the difference. Regular weighing, for example once a month, helps you notice weight gain or loss in time.

Can I keep a cat if I am allergic?

Some allergic people live with cats, but it depends on how severe the allergy is. Frequent cleaning, an air purifier with a HEPA filter, keeping the cat out of the bedroom and talking to a doctor before getting a cat all help.

Are there hypoallergenic cat breeds?

There are no fully hypoallergenic cats, because the main allergen is in saliva and skin rather than the hair itself. Some breeds may produce less allergen, but before taking a cat home spend some time with it to see how you react.

Is a cat suitable for a family with small children?

Yes, if the children are taught to respect the cat's space and not to pick it up against its will. The cat needs high places or a room to retreat to, and the litter and food should be kept out of children's reach.

Is it safe for a pregnant woman to live with a cat?

Yes, but because of the toxoplasmosis risk it is better for someone else to clean the litter box during pregnancy, or to do it daily wearing gloves. Do not feed the cat raw meat, and talk to your doctor.
