Should perches in a bird cage be horizontal?

Most perches should be horizontal or nearly so, so the bird stands steadily. Slightly sloping or branching natural perches are good for climbing, but sleeping needs a level, stable spot.

Where in the cage is the best place for a bird to sleep?

Most birds sleep on the highest stable perch, away from the door and household traffic. This perch should be a comfortable thickness and not rough, because the bird spends the whole night on it.

Should the position of perches in a cage be changed from time to time?

Small changes, such as swapping a perch or moving a branch, help keep a bird active. For nervous birds, though, leave the favourite sleeping perch where it is and change only one thing at a time.

How do I attach a wooden perch to a bird cage?

Most perches attach with a bolt, wing nut and washer from outside the cage, or slot between the bars. Tighten the perch so it does not spin or wobble under the bird, but without bending the bars.

What should I do if a perch spins or slips in the cage?

A spinning perch frightens a bird and can cause injury, so it must be fixed more firmly, for example with a bolt and washer. If the perch is too short for the bars or the fitting does not suit the bar spacing, choose another mounting method or a different perch.

Are perches with metal fittings safe for birds?

Metal bolts and brackets are safe if they are stainless steel or another bird-safe material and are not painted. Avoid rusty or galvanised parts the bird can chew, and check that the bolt has not come loose.

How can I fix a natural branch in a bird cage without a special bracket?

You can notch the ends of the branch so they hook onto the bars, or wedge the branch between two cage walls. You can also screw a bolt with a washer and wing nut into the end of the branch so it holds firmly from outside the cage.

Why is it important for a bird’s feet to have perches of different thicknesses?

When a bird always stands on a perch of the same thickness, its weight presses on the same spots of the foot, which can lead to pressure sores and inflammation. Perches of varied thickness and texture spread the pressure and exercise the foot muscles.

What is bumblefoot in birds and how is it linked to perches?

Bumblefoot, or pododermatitis, is damage to the soles of the feet that can be encouraged by unsuitable perches, excess weight and poor hygiene. Uniform, overly hard or abrasive perches raise the risk, while varied, clean perches help prevent it.

What signs show that the perches are not suiting a bird’s feet?

Warning signs include red, smooth, shiny soles, swelling, scabs, limping, frequently lifting the feet or sitting on the cage floor. If you notice these, change the perches and have a vet check the bird.

How do perches help a bird wear down its nails naturally?

Perches with varied surfaces, especially natural branches with bark and one rougher perch, slightly file the nails as the bird moves about each day. This slows their growth, though it does not always fully replace nail care.

Why does my bird keep wiping its beak on the perch?

Wiping the beak on a perch is natural behaviour that cleans off food remains and helps maintain the beak. That is why perches near the food dish get dirty faster and need cleaning more often.

Do perches help a bird look after its beak?

Yes, chewable wooden perches and a rougher perch help a bird maintain its beak naturally. If the beak is noticeably overgrown, crooked or flaking, that is not a perch problem and the bird should see a vet.

How often should bird perches be cleaned?

Wipe visibly soiled perches daily or every few days, and wash them thoroughly along with the whole cage, usually once a week. Perches near the food and water get dirty the fastest.

How do I clean a wooden bird perch?

Scrub the wooden perch with a brush and hot water to remove droppings and food remains, then dry it thoroughly. A perch-cleaning brush or a bit of sandpaper can help scrape away the soiled surface layer.

Can wooden perches be washed with household cleaners?

Strong household cleaners and scented products can soak into wood and harm a bird. Hot water and a brush are usually enough; for disinfection use bird-safe products according to the label and rinse well.

How do I disinfect bird perches?

Clean the perches mechanically first, then use a bird-safe disinfectant according to the label, or scald them with hot water if the material allows. Afterwards rinse them well and let them dry.

Can bird perches be washed in a dishwasher?

Plastic and some hardwood perches can go in a dishwasher with little or no detergent, but wood may crack or swell. After washing, dry the perch well and check it for cracks.

How long should a wooden perch dry after washing?

A wooden perch must dry completely, which can take from a few hours to a day depending on thickness. Damp wood goes mouldy, so it is handy to keep a spare set of perches to swap in while cleaning.

What should I do if a bird’s wooden perch has gone mouldy?

A mouldy perch is best thrown away, because mould can penetrate deep into the wood and harm a bird’s airways. In future, dry perches thoroughly after washing and keep the cage in a dry, ventilated place.
