Do albino and pale-coloured reptiles need weaker UVB?
Some albino or pale-morph reptiles can be more sensitive to bright light, so shaded spots and moderate UVB are especially important for them. For a particular animal’s needs it is worth asking a breeder or a vet.
Is natural sunlight outdoors good for a reptile?
Yes, in warm weather direct sun outdoors is an excellent source of UVB and heat, but the reptile must be in a secure enclosure with shade and water. Never leave a reptile in a glass or plastic container in the sun, as it can overheat within minutes.
Does an outdoor tortoise enclosure need heating?
In an outdoor enclosure a tortoise warms itself in the sun, but on cool days or nights it may need a sheltered house or a greenhouse. Any lamp or heater used outdoors must be rated for damp conditions and protected from rain.
What is an incubator for reptile eggs for?
An incubator holds the steady temperature and humidity that eggs need to develop. For many species the incubation temperature also determines the hatchlings’ sex, so the temperature must be held precisely.
Can a homemade incubator be used for reptile eggs?
A homemade incubator can be made from an insulated box, a heater and an accurate thermostat, but the temperature should be tested for several days before the eggs go in. An inaccurate thermostat or sudden swings can harm the embryos.
How often should the temperature in a reptile egg incubator be checked?
Check the incubator’s temperature and humidity daily, ideally with a thermometer that records the maximum and minimum. Open the lid as rarely and briefly as possible so the temperature stays steady.
Does a sick reptile need different heating?
Being able to warm up matters especially for a sick reptile, as heat helps the immune system work, but the temperatures should not be changed on your own. See a vet, who will tell you what conditions to keep during treatment.
Should heating change when a reptile is shedding?
A shedding reptile usually does not need different heating, but enough humidity matters, as air that is too dry hampers shedding. If shedding goes badly, check the humidity and the humid hide, and show any retained skin to a vet.
How do I heat a terrarium if the flat is very cool in winter?
In a cool flat it helps to choose a better-insulated terrarium, cover part of the mesh so heat does not escape, and use a heater that gives no light at night on a thermostat. Do not block all vents, though, as air must still circulate in the terrarium.
Can a basking lamp be covered to make it less bright?
Lamps must never be covered with fabric, paper or other materials, as these can catch fire. If a lamp is too bright or too hot, choose a lower-wattage bulb, a different type or a dimming thermostat.
Can a terrarium have too many heaters?
Yes, several powerful heaters in a small terrarium can warm the whole space and remove the cool zone. Fewer, well-placed heaters at one end on thermostats, with a clearly cooler other side, work better.
What heating does an anole need?
Anoles are small, day-active lizards that need a gentle basking spot at the top, a UVB lamp and fairly high humidity. Since their terrariums are often small, it is important that the lamp does not overheat the whole space.
What heating does a gargoyle gecko need?
Like crested geckos, gargoyle geckos like moderate room temperatures and tolerate heat poorly. If the room is cool, a low-wattage basking lamp at the top is enough, and in summer it is more important to keep the terrarium from overheating.
What heating does a tokay gecko need?
Tokay geckos are a tropical species that likes warm, humid conditions, so they need a warm zone higher in the terrarium and a cooler bottom. Heating is thermostat-controlled and humidity is kept up by misting.
Is ordinary room temperature enough for a reptile without heating?
For most reptiles, apart from some species that like cooler conditions, room temperature is not enough; they need a basking spot that is considerably warmer. Even for cooler-loving species the temperature must not drop below their safe range.
What socket type do terrarium basking bulbs use?
Most basking bulbs, ceramic heat emitters and mercury vapour lamps have the common E27 screw base, so they fit standard ceramic sockets. Still check the base and the fixture’s maximum wattage before buying.
Does a new T5 UVB lamp need a burn-in period?
Some manufacturers state that new UVB lamps shine more strongly for the first tens of hours, after which output settles. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and in the first weeks watch especially closely whether the reptile avoids the light.
How can I remember to replace a UVB lamp on time?
The simplest way is to write the installation date on the lamp or fixture and mark the replacement date in a calendar or on your phone. That way you do not rely on how bright the lamp looks, since UVB fades unnoticed.
Does terrarium wiring need a residual current device (RCD)?
Terrariums often contain water, so it is safest when the sockets are protected by an RCD that cuts power if current leaks. If you do not know whether your electrical installation has one, ask an electrician.
Can a thermostat probe cable be extended?
Extending most thermostat probe cables is not recommended, as it can affect reading accuracy and for some manufacturers voids the warranty. If the cable is too short, move the thermostat closer to the terrarium or choose a model with a longer probe.
