All questions
Why does my cat drink from the sink or tap instead of its bowl?
Many cats like running, cool, fresh water, and water standing in a bowl may seem unpleasant or smell to them. Try a drinking fountain, change the water more often and wash the bowl thoroughly.
Why does my cat scoop water out of the bowl with its paw?
Some cats do this out of curiosity, in play or because they struggle to see the water surface, especially in a dark bowl. A lighter, wide bowl filled to the top, or a fountain, may help.
Does bowl colour matter to a cat?
Colour does not matter much to a cat, but in a light bowl it is easier to spot dirt and the water level, and some cats see the water surface more easily. Material, shape and cleanliness matter far more.
How do I stop my cat’s bowl from sliding across the floor?
Choose a bowl with a rubber ring or non-slip base, a heavy ceramic bowl or one that sits in a stand. A silicone mat under the bowls stops sliding and catches spilt water and crumbs.
Is a mat needed under cat bowls?
A mat is not essential but very handy: it protects the floor from water and food, stops bowls sliding and is easy to wash. Silicone mats with a raised edge work best.
Why does my cat tip over or push its bowl?
A cat may push its bowl around in play, to get attention when it is empty or because it dislikes where it is placed. A heavier or non-slip bowl, a bowl in a stand and regular mealtimes help.
Does a cat need a raised bowl?
Most cats do not need a raised bowl, but a slight lift can be more comfortable for older cats with joint problems, large breeds or cats that often regurgitate after eating. The height should not make the cat lift its head above shoulder level.
How high should a raised bowl be for a cat?
The rim should be about level with the cat’s elbows or slightly lower, so it eats with its head tilted a little down. A stand that is too high makes the cat stretch its neck and can be uncomfortable.
What are tilted bowls for cats for?
A tilted bowl slopes slightly towards the cat, so food gathers in one spot and is easier to pick up. They are especially handy for flat-faced cats, older cats and cats that struggle to reach the bottom of the bowl.
What bowls suit Persians and other flat-faced cats?
Flat-faced cats such as Persians or Exotic Shorthairs find very shallow, wide or tilted bowls and plates most comfortable. A deep bowl forces them to press their face against the rim and makes eating harder.
Is a bowl in a stand suitable for a cat?
Bowls in a metal or wooden stand do not slide, do not tip and are slightly raised. Choose a stand with removable bowls so they are easy to wash, and one heavy enough that the cat cannot knock it over.
Does a raised bowl help a cat that regurgitates after eating?
For some cats a raised bowl and slower eating mean less regurgitation. If a cat vomits or regurgitates often, discuss the cause with a vet, as it may be more than a sign of eating too fast.
What bowls should I choose for a kitten?
Small, shallow and fairly heavy bowls suit a kitten, so it can reach the food easily and not tip the bowl. The water bowl should also be shallow so a small kitten cannot fall into it.
Can a kitten use a drinking fountain?
Yes, most kittens quickly learn to drink from a fountain, and some like it more than a bowl. Choose a model with a shallow drinking surface and leave a regular water bowl next to it at first.
When does a kitten need bigger bowls?
When a kitten grows, its portions get bigger and its whiskers start touching the sides of the small bowl, it is time for an adult-size bowl. This is usually between four and eight months of age.
What bowls are comfortable for an older cat?
Heavy, non-slip, wide bowls that are slightly raised or tilted are comfortable for an older cat, so it does not have to bend down low. Keep the bowls where the cat can reach them without jumping, and water in several spots.
Does an older cat need more water bowls?
Older cats often have kidney problems, so drinking enough is especially important for them. Several water bowls or a fountain in easily reached spots, especially near their favourite resting places, encourage them to drink more often.
How many bowls are needed in a home with several cats?
Each cat should have its own food bowl, and there should be at least one more water bowl than there are cats, in different places. This reduces competition and lets a shyer cat eat and drink in peace.
Can several cats eat from one bowl?
Some cats share a bowl without problems, but often one cat eats more while another gets stressed or eats too little. Separate bowls placed a little apart help control each cat’s portion.
How do I feed several cats if one eats the other’s food?
Feed the cats in separate rooms or at different heights, and remove leftovers after the meal. The most reliable solution is a feeder that opens only for a specific cat’s microchip or collar tag.
