Also known as: Caucasian Mountain Dog, Kavkaz Dog, Caucasian dog, Kavkaski Ovcar, Kavkaz Mastiff
The Caucasian Shepherd spent centuries guarding sheep flocks in the Caucasus mountains against wolves and even bears, often working with almost no human oversight across large, remote pastures. A male can weigh up to 100 kilograms, and the thick, long double coat with its mane-like ruff around the neck adds extra protection in a fight with a predator. That size and independence mean the breed makes its own calls rather than always waiting on a handler, which makes it a poor fit for a first-time owner. In Russia and Georgia it's still widely used to guard livestock rather than kept as a city pet. Early, consistent socialization is essential, since an adult raised without it can become difficult to manage. It stays intensely loyal and protective of its own family. Life expectancy runs 10 to 11 years.

For most of the day a Caucasian Shepherd looks lazy: lying by the gate, chin on its paws, watching the street. It isn't laziness, it's a watch. This dog guarded flocks against wolves for centuries and still knows one job: protecting whatever it considers its own. When a stranger stops at the fence, it rises without any hurry, and that is usually all it takes.
It is devoted to its family, but by nature it is unfriendly towards strangers and unfamiliar dogs, and no training will erase that, only soften it. It learns slowly and decides for itself whether your request is worth the effort, so it needs an experienced, calm and consistent owner and early, thorough socialisation. Take care around children: even a friendly dog this size can knock a toddler flat with one move, and it may see your children's visiting friends as a threat.
A flat is no place for it. It needs a spacious, securely fenced yard and an owner who understands that letting guests through the gate is not a detail but a matter of logistics. It needs a moderate amount of walking, and at night it stays on duty and reports anything it finds suspicious. If you want a guardian that will truly guard, you have found one; if you want a dog that befriends the whole street, choose another breed.
A Caucasian Shepherd wears a long, dense coat with a thick undercoat and a mane around the neck: a proper mountain fur coat that lets it sleep peacefully in the snow. Once a week, brush right down to the skin, paying most attention behind the ears, through the mane and on the hind legs, where tangles form first. When the dog moults, the undercoat comes out in clumps, and then a daily brushing is worth it, or your yard will look as if a pillow fight took place there. As you brush, part the coat and look at the skin: under a layer this thick, redness, a tick or a sore hides easily.
Check the eyes once a week, up close: clean, not watering, not red, and no lashes touching the eye. The ears are small and covered in hair, so lift them and look inside: clean, odour-free and not red means all is well. Get a dog this size used to being handled while it is still small enough to sit on your lap.
When a dog weighs as much as a grown man, sometimes more, every joint and every eyelid works under real load. The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a hardy dog built for harsh mountain weather and can live ten to eleven years, with only a couple of conditions linked to the breed. They are worth knowing so you notice in time, and a vet will decide what comes next.
This is general information, not veterinary advice. For your own dog's health, tests and treatment, see a vet.
The edge of the eyelid rolls inward, so the lashes rub against the surface of the eye. You might notice your dog squinting, an eye that waters or turns red, or a paw rubbing at the face. A Caucasian Shepherd has a massive head and a face framed in thick hair, so look at the eyes up close, and if you see these signs, show your dog to a vet.
The hip or elbow joints develop abnormally, so their surfaces wear over time. You might notice your dog getting up with effort after a rest, limping, or avoiding stairs. For a dog that can weigh up to a hundred kilos, sound joints matter enormously, so if you are getting a puppy, ask the breeder about the parents' health testing.
This list is chosen by the breed's weight (100 kg) rather than the breed itself: shops label food by dog size, so every breed of the same size gets the same list. Prices are updated daily.
