Also known as: Kangal, Kangal köpeği, Sivas Kangal Dog, Turkish Dog, Coban Köpegi
The Kangal Shepherd developed in Turkey's Sivas province, guarding sheep flocks against wolves and bears for centuries while working largely on its own across remote pasture. A male can weigh up to 65 kilograms on a powerful yet agile frame, and the short to medium double coat handles both a hot summer and a cold Anatolian winter. Turkey treats the breed as a national symbol, and its export was restricted by law for a long stretch of the 20th century. These dogs are often fitted with a spiked collar to protect the throat during a fight with a predator, a working tradition rather than decoration. A Kangal makes its own decisions and can patrol a territory all night without ever being prompted to. It stays calm around its own family and the livestock it protects, but it will never warm up to strangers. Life expectancy runs 10 to 13 years.

Evening on the pasture, the sheep already bedded down, and on top of the hill sits a big, pale dog watching the dark. The Kangal Shepherd Dog was bred in Turkey to guard flocks against wolves, and that job shapes nearly everything about its character: it is calm, independent, watchful, and it makes its own decisions about what counts as a threat.
This is not a dog that chases a ball. It needs space, a securely fenced garden and long daily walks on the lead, and its main occupation is keeping an eye on its territory. It is intelligent, but obedience doesn't come automatically: bred to work without instructions, it listens to someone it respects, so it needs an experienced, calm, consistent owner and early, broad socialising. A city flat is not for it.
It guards its family with real devotion, and meets strangers and unfamiliar dogs with suspicion; don't expect it to be everyone's friend. It can be patient with the children of its own home, but given its size and guarding instinct, children's games with visiting friends need supervising. In the right home, where it is allowed to be what it is, a Kangal is a calm, dignified and deeply reliable companion.
The Kangal Shepherd Dog's coat is short to medium, dense and double, made to protect it from the heat and cold of the Anatolian uplands rather than to look pretty. For most of the year a weekly going-over with a brush or rubber mitt is enough to lift out dead hair and dust. When the coat sheds, more undercoat comes out, so brush more often during those weeks; with a dog that weighs as much as an adult person, that is real work, and worth getting it used to from puppyhood.
Brushing is a good chance to look over the whole dog: the skin for scratches or redness, the ears to see they are clean and don't smell, the eyes to check they are clear. Trim the nails regularly, and teach calm handling while the puppy still fits on your lap.
We don't have reliable health information specific to this breed, so we don't list conditions here. Keep up regular vet check-ups, and if you are getting a puppy, ask the breeder about the parents' health testing.
This is general information, not veterinary advice. For your own dog's health, tests and treatment, see a vet.
This list is chosen by the breed's weight (65 kg) rather than the breed itself: shops label food by dog size, so every breed of the same size gets the same list. Prices are updated daily.
