Kidneys and urinary tract

Polycystic kidney disease

An inherited kidney disease in which fluid-filled sacs, called cysts, form in the kidneys. They slowly grow, press on healthy tissue and make it harder for the kidneys to work.

What it is

The kidneys filter the blood and remove waste from it. In this disease more and more cysts appear, less healthy tissue is left, and the body clears waste less and less well.

The cysts start growing at a young age, yet a cat can look healthy for a long time until the kidneys can no longer do their job. That is why the signs can be noticed late and by chance, at a check-up.

At home you can help your vet: notice how much your cat drinks and how it passes urine, and report any change. Observations like these help decide in good time whether tests are needed.

Signs you may notice

A cat drinks more water and passes more urine than usual, becomes less lively, eats less well and may lose weight.

When to see a vet

Book a visit if your cat clearly drinks or passes urine more, loses weight, becomes listless or no longer wants to eat.

This is general information, not veterinary advice. For your own cat's health, tests and treatment, see a vet.
