Is a spider plant poisonous to cats?

Updated

Answer Safe

No, a spider plant is not poisonous to cats, but a cat that eats a lot of its leaves may vomit or have diarrhoea.

  1. Safe
  2. Not safe
  3. Dangerous

Why it is safe for cats

The spider plant is considered a houseplant that is not poisonous to cats. Its long, swaying leaves attract cats, so they like to chew them and play with the hanging plantlets.

The leaves are plant fibre a cat cannot digest, so after eating a lot of them it may vomit or have diarrhoea. If the vomiting keeps coming back, the cat stops eating or becomes dull, contact a vet.

A plant that is not poisonous does not make everything in its pot harmless: fertilisers, pest sprays and soil additives can harm a cat.

What to watch out for

  • A cat that eats a lot of leaves may vomit or have diarrhoea.
  • Fertilisers and pest sprays used on the plant are harmful to a cat.
  • A cat can knock the pot over or dig in the soil.
  • If your cat likes chewing plants, offer it cat grass so it does not go looking for other plants that may be poisonous.
