Ate or licked a plant? Contact a vet

Call a veterinary clinic straight away, day or night, even if your pet seems well: signs can take hours or even days to appear.

Say which plant and when, and take a photo or a piece of the plant with you.

Why it is dangerous to cats

Daffodils contain substances that strongly irritate the stomach and the gut and can also affect the heart. Every part of the plant is dangerous, but the bulbs are the richest in these substances. They also pass into the water a bunch of daffodils stood in.

At first the cat may drool, vomit and have diarrhoea; later it can become weak and tremble, and its heart rhythm can be upset. How much of the plant does harm cannot be judged at home.

If your cat may have chewed a daffodil or drunk from the vase, contact a vet or an emergency clinic straight away, even if it seems well. Take a photo or a piece of the plant with you.

What to watch out for

  • Drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea can follow.
  • The cat can become weak, dull and trembling.
  • The heart rhythm can be upset.
  • Daffodils sold in spring as cut flowers or in pots are dangerous too, and so is the water they stood in.

Which parts are dangerous

Not every part of the plant is equally dangerous.

  • Bulb

    Dangerous

It is the richest in poisonous substances.

  • Leaves and flowers

    Dangerous

They are poisonous too, so even a bitten-off piece is dangerous.

  • Vase water
