Is a spider plant poisonous to dogs?

Updated

Answer Safe

No, a spider plant is not poisonous to dogs, but eating a lot of the leaves can upset the stomach and cause vomiting.

  1. Safe
  2. Not safe
  3. Dangerous

Why it is safe for dogs

The spider plant is a favourite houseplant with long, narrow, green or striped leaves and hanging tufts of plantlets. It is not poisonous to dogs, so it suits a home with a dog.

Still, the plant is not dog food. Eating a lot of the leaves can irritate the stomach, and the dog may vomit or have diarrhoea. Fertiliser or plant-protection products in the pot can also do harm, so keep the plant where your dog cannot reach it.

What to watch out for

  • Eating a lot of the leaves can cause vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Fertiliser or plant-protection products in the pot can irritate the stomach.
  • The hanging plantlets invite play, so a dog can knock the pot over.
