Cane Corso

The Cane Corso comes from Italy and is considered a direct descendant of ancient Roman war dogs, with the name itself thought to derive from the Latin cohors, meaning guard or protector. A male can weigh up to 50 kilograms on a muscular frame, and the short, dense coat needs little grooming despite heavy seasonal shedding a few times a year. In rural Italy the breed historically guarded farmsteads and hunted large game such as boar. It nearly disappeared by the mid 20th century and was rebuilt only through the efforts of dedicated breeders in the 1970s and 80s. It needs early, consistent socialization, since its size and guarding instinct without proper training can pose a real risk. It stays close and protective toward its own family. Life expectancy runs 9 to 12 years.

St. Bernard

At a monastery pass in the Swiss Alps, founded in the 11th century by Saint Bernard of Menthon, monks used this breed to search for travelers lost in avalanches and blizzards. The legendary dog Barry is credited with saving over forty people during his working life. A modern male can weigh up to 82 kilograms, ranking it among the heaviest breeds on the FCI list. The coat comes in short or long variants, both dense and cold resistant. Despite the massive size, the breed is known for a calm, patient temperament, particularly around children. Drooling and heavy shedding are simply part of owning a dog this size. Life expectancy runs 8 to 10 years, short given the weight it carries.
