Why only in moderation for cats
Blueberries are not toxic to cats. They contain water, fibre and antioxidants, which is why they are sometimes added to cat foods. Still, a cat is a true carnivore, cannot taste sweetness and gets the nutrients it needs from food of animal origin.
Too many berries can upset digestion. Sweetened blueberries, jams, yoghurts and baked goods with blueberries are not suitable for a cat because of the sugar and fat. If your cat shows no interest in berries, there is no need to offer them.
How to give it
- Give fresh, washed blueberries with nothing added.
- Cut or mash a larger berry.
- The first time, give very little and watch how your cat feels.
- Give them only now and then, not instead of food.
What to watch out for
- Too much can cause diarrhoea or vomiting.
- Jams, baked goods and desserts are high in sugar and fat.
- A hard frozen berry is difficult for a cat to chew and can get stuck in the throat.
