Why only in moderation for cats
Bananas are not toxic to cats. A cat is a true carnivore, though: it needs protein from animal sources and has no need for fruit in its diet. Cats cannot taste sweetness, so a banana is not a treat to them the way it is to people, although some are curious about its soft texture.
Bananas are high in sugar and starch, which a cat does not need and which can add to weight gain. Too large a piece can upset digestion. Take particular care if your cat is overweight or has diabetes.
How to give it
- Peel it and give only a small piece of the flesh.
- The first time, give very little and watch how your cat feels.
- If your cat shows no interest, do not offer it: it does not need it.
- Give it only now and then, not instead of food.
What to watch out for
- Too much can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation.
- Sugar and extra calories are not suitable for an overweight or diabetic cat.
- The peel is hard to digest and can block the gut.
- Banana chips and baked goods contain added sugar and fat.
