Why it happens
-
The hunting instinct
A cat is a born hunter. Birds outside the window, insects on the balcony and smells from the stairwell all wake the urge to track, stalk and pounce, even with a full bowl.
-
Territory
Cats want to know what is happening on their patch. When it spots a strange cat through the window, a cat wants to be out there chasing it off, so it cries at the door or the window.
-
Boredom
In a flat where nothing changes and there is nowhere to climb, a cat gets bored sooner or later. It heads for wherever it thinks something interesting is going on.
-
Heat or a mature tom
A female in heat or a mature unneutered tom tries hard to get out to find a mate, calls loudly and tries to slip through any open door. Discuss neutering or spaying with your vet.
-
A former outdoor cat
A cat that used to live in the countryside or on the street misses its freedom more than one raised indoors from kittenhood. It may need more time and patience to get used to life inside.
What helps
- Play that feels like hunting Several times a day, play with a wand toy or a toy the cat can track, stalk and catch. Afterwards offer a few treats or a meal: a real hunt ends with eating too.
- A spot by the window A cat tree or a window-sill perch by a window looking out on birds and trees is the cat's television. A bird feeder in the yard or outside the window gives it even more to watch.
- A safe balcony and windows Fence in the balcony with sturdy cat netting and fit opening windows with proper cat screens. A window tilted open for ventilation is dangerous: a cat can get trapped in the gap.
- Walks on a harness Some cats learn to walk on a harness and lead. Get it used to the harness at home, a little at a time and with treats, choose a quiet spot outside, and check for ticks when you come back in.
- Preventing escapes Before you open the front door, toss a treat or a toy to the other end of the room. Make sure the cat is microchipped and registered: a runaway is much easier to find.

When it is a question for a vet
See a vet if the urge to get out has come on suddenly along with loud crying at night, restlessness, or changes in appetite or weight, especially in an older cat, or if your cat is in heat and you want to discuss spaying. After an escape or a walk, check the cat for injuries and ticks.
