Why it happens
-
A habit from kittenhood
A nursing kitten presses its mother's belly with its front paws, one after the other. The movement goes with warmth, food and safety, so many cats keep it all their lives.
-
Contentment and calm
A cat kneads lying on your lap, a soft blanket or its bed, purring with its eyes half closed. It is one of the clearest signs that it feels good and trusts you.
-
Making a bed
The cat's wild ancestors trampled grass or leaves to make a comfortable place to lie. Treading the spot briefly before lying down is the same inborn movement.
-
Scent marks
The pads of the paws have scent glands, so a kneading cat leaves its smell behind. It marks the blanket, the bed or you as its own.
-
A kitten weaned early
Cats taken from their mother too early sometimes knead a great deal and suck on fabric at the same time. It is not an illness, but watch that the cat does not swallow the fabric.
What helps
- Let it knead Kneading is natural and harmless, so there is no need to stop it. Do not scold the cat or push it off your lap: it may stop seeking you out.
- A thick blanket on your lap If the claws dig painfully into your skin, put a thick blanket or a cushion on your lap. The cat kneads the blanket and you do not get hurt.
- Regular claw care Shorter claw tips catch less on clothes and skin. The claw care guide shows how to trim them safely.
- A soft bed of its own A soft bed or blanket in a favourite spot gives the cat a place to knead and rest in peace. Many cats like beds with raised, soft sides.
- A scratching post for the claws Kneading does not replace scratching. A sturdy scratching post keeps the claws healthy and draws the cat away from the furniture.

When it is a question for a vet
Kneading itself is not a sign of illness. See a vet if the cat seems sore while kneading or being touched, limps or no longer wants to jump, if you notice an injured paw or claw, or if it does not just suck fabric but swallows it.
