Eaten some? Contact a vet now

Call a veterinary clinic straight away, day or night, even if your pet seems well: signs can take hours or even days to appear.

Tell them what was eaten and when, and bring the packaging if you can.

Why it is dangerous for dogs

In a dog's warm stomach the yeast keeps working. The dough rises, the stomach swells and can even twist, which is an urgent, life-threatening condition.

As the yeast ferments, it produces alcohol, which passes into the blood. The dog may then stagger, become confused or lethargic, and its body temperature may drop.

How much dough causes harm cannot be judged at home, and the signs may only show after a few hours. Contact a vet or an emergency clinic now, even if your dog seems well, and tell them what was eaten and when.

What to watch out for

  • The dough rises in the stomach: the belly swells and hurts, and the stomach can twist.
  • The dog may retch without bringing anything up.
  • The alcohol produced causes staggering, confusion and lethargy.
  • Dough may contain raisins or chocolate, which are also dangerous for dogs.
  • The raw flour and eggs in dough can carry bacteria.

Different parts

Not every part of this food is equally safe.

  • Baked bread

    In moderation

In plain baked bread the yeast no longer works, so a small piece with nothing added is not dangerous.
