Why only in moderation for dogs
Plain pasta is made from flour and water, sometimes with egg. It is not toxic to dogs, but it is mostly starch and calories, with few useful nutrients for a dog.
The main risk is in the sauces and toppings. Tomato or cream sauces can contain onion and garlic, which are dangerous to dogs, as well as a lot of salt, fat and cheese. So only plain pasta with nothing added is fine to give, and only as an extra, not instead of a balanced dog food.
How to give it
- Give only plain cooked pasta, with no sauce, salt or oil.
- Let it cool and give only a little.
- The first time, give very little and watch how your dog feels.
- Give it only now and then, as a treat.
What to watch out for
- Sauces can contain onion or garlic, which are dangerous to dogs.
- Salty, fatty or cheesy pasta can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
- A lot of pasta adds calories and can contribute to weight gain.
- If your dog has been found to have a wheat allergy, do not give it pasta.
- Raw, uncooked pasta is hard to digest.
